In college, I studied in Florence for a semester. That St. Patrick's Day, some friends and I made our way to Dublin. It was a blast -- the entire city was out in celebration, and not in a cheesy, trashy kind of way, but the "it's such a huge tradition" kind of way. There was a big parade with amazing costumes and props, and of course, plenty of Guinness to go around.
While we were in town, we visited the Guinness brewery at St. James's Gate [I'm a big fan of dark beer, especially Guinness], and we had a blast touring a factory with such history. The brick walls are lined with the charming illustrated ad posters -- the "My Goodness" campaign is a favorite of mine. The posters were designed by John Gilroy in the 1930's, and portray various animals drinking Guinness and an exasperated zookeeper. Such a testament to the power of a clever slogan with an eye-catching illustration.

So, all this to say, Happy St. Patrick's Day!
